Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham on Northern Colorado, Kenneth Scott As A Co-starter And The Expectations Of The Offense

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham conducted his first Monday press conference discussing Thursday’s season opener versus Northern Colorado. Here are some observations:

-The biggest news came from the latest depth chart that named Kenneth Scott as a co-starter at wide receiver with DeVonte Christopher. Whittingham said it’s because his play during camp should be rewarded. I’m just surprised that he will be sharing reps with the supposed number one receiver in Christopher. Curious to see how this plays out and whether it’s just a motivational tactic.

-Whittingham briefly talked about Northern Colorado but said the Utes need to focus more on themselves. That is code for the Bears stink and he is not worried about what they can do.

-He also said they plan to use a good percentage of their offensive package. Uh, yeah. I don’t quite think they will because it won’t be necessary. No need to show anything to future opponents in what should be a complete rout.

-Whittingham stressed once again he has a great deal of confidence in new and young offensive coordinator Brian Johnson. I don’t have any doubt he does. Still the fact he’s the youngest OC in college football history (or so we think) you have to expect he will have some growing pains. If anything though an easy blowout will only help Johnson get more comfortable.

-Overall he expects the offense to be much more explosive with Jordan Wynn and has full confidence in his health. I have to think like many of the Ute fans out there, he’ll still be nervous when Wynn takes that first big hit.

-He expects Travis Wilson to take some reps in Thursday’s game. That means he will not redshirt. With Wynn’s injury track record it makes sense that he see’s action when he can.
